The Los Angeles Confidential Installation by Devin Troy Strother

Join us this evening for the opening reception of The Los Angeles Confidential by Devin Troy Strother at Good Mother Gallery’s Annex Space (5075 W. Adams Blvd) from 5–8 PM.

Across the street at our main gallery (5103 W. Adams Blvd), our current group exhibition, Manual Override, will also be on view - featuring the works of Jason Revok, Liz Lee, Chris Velez, Zoe Alameda & Noah Malone.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Good Mother Gallery is pleased to present The Los Angeles Confidential, a site specific installation by Devin Troy Strother. The exhibition will be on view in Los Angeles from February 19th through March 14th with an opening reception on February 19th from 5 to 8pm.

For over a decade, Strother has built a practice that dissects the language of Black cultural production, pop iconography, and art history with a subversive humor that both seduces and indicts. His work embraces excess narratively, visually, and materially, collapsing references from sports, music, cinema, and the art world into hyper charged compositions that oscillate between celebration and critique.

In this new installation, Strother pushes his signature approach into immersive territory, constructing a layered environment that riffs on the aesthetics of commerce, media, and myth making. Using text, neon, painting, and sculptural interventions, The Los Angeles Confidential transforms the gallery space into a surreal tableau where spectacle and commentary collide. Familiar cultural symbols are distorted and recontextualized, reappearing in unexpected ways that destabilize their assumed meanings. Strother’s fluency in both fine art and street culture allows him to move fluidly between satire and sincerity, creating work that is at once self aware and deeply invested in the power of imagery.

Throughout the installation, moments of absurdity amplify the tensions at play between legibility and abstraction, irony and reverence, art and advertisement. A large-scale assemblage evokes the visual language of billboards and urban signage, while scattered interventions recall the guerrilla tactics of underground media. Elsewhere, a sequence of hand painted panels references art historical lineages and cartoonish exaggerations in equal measure, infusing traditional composition with an irreverent sensibility.

This exhibition is presented in collaboration with The Pit.

On View: February 19th, 2025 - March 14th, 2025

Gallery Hours: Wednesdays- Saturdays 11am-5pm

Location: Good Mother Annex - 5075 W. Adams Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90016

Manual Override : Group Exhibition: LOS ANGELES

Good Mother Gallery Los Angeles is pleased to present Manual Override, a group exhibition featuring new works by Jason Revok, Noah Malone, Chris Velez, Zoe Alameda and Liz Lee.

Manual Override highlights the transition of mechanical and industrial elements from their typical external environments into the gallery space. The show will feature a variety of sculptural and kinetic works, emphasizing the physical presence of machinery not just as tools, but as integral components of the art itself. The use of these elements challenges traditional art-making processes and encourages us to consider new dynamics in the creation and perception of art. The aim is to provide a space where the boundary between artist, tool, and viewer is blurred, inviting an examination of how we coexist with the evolving landscape of technology and objecthood in contemporary art settings.

Opening Reception: Saturday, January 18th from 5pm-7pm

On View: January 18th, 2025 - February 8th, 2025

Gallery Hours: Wednesdays- Saturdays 11am-5pm

Location: 5103 W. Adams Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90016

Shoshana Wayne Gallery Reopens!

Anna Lukashevsky: The New Immigrants

Shoshana Wayne Gallery is pleased to present Anna Lukashevsky: The New Immigrants. This is the Haifa-based artist's first exhibition with the gallery. The exhibition will be on view June 29th through August 17th, 2024, with an opening reception on Saturday, June 29th from 4-6pm.

Anna Lukashevsky is interested in the psychological and sociological aspects of the traumatic events, especially in portraits. Over the past two years, she has painted portraits of new immigrants from Russia and Ukraine. Lukashevsky’s subjects abandoned comfortable lives in Russia because their beliefs were no longer tolerated in the place they called home. The cast of artists, writers, journalists, and filmmakers seen in Lukashevsky’s paintings make up a fraction of the 70,000+ Russian and Ukrainian immigrants to Israel, and each portrait relays the subject’s story. As Lukashevsky speaks with her subjects during lengthy portraiture sessions, their experiences transform her images from an archetype to an individual.

The New Immigrants project began in 2022 with paintings of Russian and Ukrainian immigrants, but after October 7th Lukashevsky was instilled with a desire to capture the emotional impact of Israel’s war against Hamas. These new portraits depict the trauma, depression, and sadness that Israelis have felt since the war with Hamas began. Lukashevsky imbues her paintings with a sense of empathy and fear, portraying an uncertain future and viewing the work as warning signals to the cultural world.

As an immigrant from the USSR herself, Lukashevsky has felt an intrinsic connection to her subjects, and viewed herself as an outsider in the Israeli cultural world. Lukashevsky is a part of the New Barbizon Group, a collective of five Israeli painters born in the USSR who offer a contemporary version of the tradition of painting en plein air. Following in the footsteps of the 19th century Barbizon School, the artists attempt to hold a mirror to contemporary life and highlight the lived experiences of those around them. In The New Immigrants, Lukashevsky utilizes this philosophy to represent the beauty and trauma of the present through those living in it. By deeply engaging with and sharing the stories of her subjects, the artist humanizes the refugee crisis and the effects of war.

Anna Lukashevsky was born in Vilnius, Lithuania and studied at HaMidrasha Art School, Israel. She has had solo exhibitions at the Haifa Museum of Art, and Bat Yam Museum of Art. Lukashevsky’s work can be found in the collections of the Israel Museum, Jerusalem; Tel Aviv Museum; Haifa Museum, Israel; and numerous private collections.
